My Life in Lists: Top 10 Favourite Songs

As I mentioned the other day, I’m starting to make life lists. I thought I’d start with something fairly simple, sort of as a warm up for the harder, bigger stuff to come: my top 10 favourite songs list.

If you’re like me and you occasionally put your iPod on shuffle, bringing up whatever you happen to have downloaded over the years, listening to music turns into a walk down memory lane.  I associate a lot of songs, especially those from when I was younger, with specific times in my life.   For example, Rihanna’s Shut Up and Drive = writing the DAT (Dental Aptitude Test); Bryan Adams’ Summer of ’69 = hanging out with friends in my room and learning the lyrics; Roxette’s Joyride = hanging out with my boyfriend and his friends in high school.  You get the idea.  Basically, most of my favourite songs are favourite because I associate them with being happy.  Another requirement for a favourite: I have to be able to sing along if it comes on the radio when I’m driving.

I have something like 1,500 songs on my iPod.  (I imagine that’s average.) Narrowing it down to 10 songs was tough, but here, in no particular order, are what I consider to be my favourite songs:

ACDC –  Thunderstruck  (House parties, bush parties, dances in high school.)

Kenny Loggins – Footloose  (Dancing and singing in my room.)

Bryan Adams – Summer of ’69 (see above)

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones (I did a lot of driving the summer following my first year of university: between home and Saskatoon, between home and Melfort, between home and surrounding towns to visit friends.  Just broke up with my high school boyfriend, casually dating a couple of cute guys.  I had this CD on a lot.)

Poison – Talk Dirty to Me (Hanging with my best friends around grade 6 or so, just being girls.)

Dixie Chicks – Ready to Run (Newly married, first year post-university.  Happy times.)

Lenny Kravitz – Are You Gonna Go My Way
(If I go on a road trip, this song is on the playlist.)

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – Fishin’ in the Dark
(Dancing with my husband.  Summer.)

Sara Bareilles – Love Song (Italy 2008.  We took a trip for our 10th wedding anniversary.)

U2 -Desire(Listened to this song, heck, this album, over and over in my room in early high school, usually while reading.)

What’s your favourite song?

Oh, you have some really excellent ones in here! I think one of my favorites is Brighter Than The Sun by Colbie Caillat. It came on my iPod during my first marathon and I can vividly remember the course at that point – it was just terrifically magical.
